Advent Is Historically Significant
According to Holman Bible Dictionary “advent designates the coming or second coming of Christ. The English word Advent comes from a Latin word meaning “coming” and used primarily to designate a period before Christmas during which believers prepare for the Christmas season and reflect on the meaning of the coming of Christ. The Latin word from which it comes is adventus, meaning “arrival” or “coming” from the word advenire (ad- “to” venire “come”). Adventus is a translation of the Greek word Parousia, which means “presence” or “coming.”
Advent is a historically significant time for believers. Over time the church extended Advent to not only celebrate the second coming of Jesus at the end of time, but to include the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, and the anticipation of his presence among us through the promised Holy Spirit. Advent starts on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day and ends on Christmas Eve. Jesus is holy so Advent is holy.
