Jesus began His ministry in Galilee, preaching the kingdom. He was walking by the Sea of Galilee and saw two brothers, who were fishermen. They were Simon called Peter and Andrew his brother; they were casting a net into the sea (v.18). Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men” (v.19). He gave them a command and made them a promise. “To follow” is an idiomatic expression of discipleship. Jesus called them to be His disciples and fish for the souls of men. In other words, He called them as His disciples to accept Him as their Master and Teacher and walk the same path of life that He walk and proclaim the message of good news.
How did the brothers respond to Him? “They immediately left their nets and followed Him (v.20). They were working for that was their source of income. However, when Jesus calls us to service in His kingdom, it is imperative that we SWWD (stop what we’re doing) respond as these brothers did – immediately. They left their nets to do Kingdom work. It is important work, and we must be willing to commit ourselves to His calling.
Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; they were in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them (v.21); they immediately left the boat and their father, and followed Him” (v.22). They became His disciples, believing and trusting in Him and following His example. They too were working, getting their nets ready for the next day. There is much work in the vineyard. Jesus is calling you today. Will you accept the call to His kingdom? He will make you fishers of men. Give Him a handclap and a shout of praise.
