1 Corinthians 2:11-12
Here the apostle continued his teaching contrasting human wisdom with God’s wisdom. Previously he said, “That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God” (v.5), demonstrating that your faith is rooted and grounded in Jesus Christ and His crucifixion. “For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God” (v.11). This expressed a truth about humanity that cannot be denied – no one knows how another person thinks except that person’s own spirit which is in him. It’s the same for the things of God; no man knows the things of God except they are revealed by His Holy Spirit which lives in the redeemed.
Paul said, “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God” (v.12). Our Father is good and the giver of all good and perfect gifts: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights…” (James 1:17). Our Father did not selfishly give us the “spirit of the world.” No, He graciously gave us “the spirit which is of God” – the Holy Spirit, Whose life-giving presence dwells eternally in the hearts of believers, empowering them to fulfill His will and purpose for their lives. Through His Spirit, we have hope for tomorrow, knowing that God will do just what He said.
