Luke 1:14-17, NKJV
As Zacharias fulfilled his chosen lot to serve as priest, he was troubled and afraid when an angel of the Lord appeared to him. Surely his reaction is indicative of how anyone of us would react because of the presence of God. And the angel encouraged and reassured him that he did not need to be afraid because his prayer is heard; his wife Elisabeth will bear him a son, and he will call his name John (vv.8-13).
The angel continued a monologue prophesying to Zacharias about his promised son. The angel said that he will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at the birth of his son (v.14). For he will be great in the sight of the Lord and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb (v.15). And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God (v.16). He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord” (v.17).
What good news the angel delivered to Zacharias! After all the years that he and Elizabeth walked righteously and obediently before God, they will be honored with a son who will give them joy and gladness, and he will be great. This reminds us that God answers prayers of the faithful who “… wait patiently for Him” (Ps.37:7a) because He is purposeful in all His ways.
Lift up your voice and shout, “Glory!”
